Running in Paradise

Guam is well known for its white sandy beaches, crystal clear ocean, aquatic life and duty free shopping. However, one of island’s best-kept secrets that visitors are finding out is the active lifestyle her people have come to embrace.

In the early morning hours of this past Sunday, April 13, thousands of runners descended over Guam’s iconic Tumon Bay to take part in the 2014 Guam International Marathon. Runners from the U.S. Mainland, Japan, Korea, Australia, Ireland, the Netherlands, China, Hong Kong and other places around the world traveled a great distance to take part in this record breaking event. The island's local community of athletes, as well as their family and friends, also participated to support the 5k, 10k, half marathon or full marathon segments of the second annual race.

The turnout and support of GIM is a testament of how the island is experiencing a fitness revolution. It's not uncommon in Guam's modern era to find 5k races happening virtually every weekend of the year. Runners at all levels have banded together to participate at these events, cheer on family and friends or simply wake up early to watch the sun rise from a new perspective. It's in the crisp peacefulness of Guam's mornings that the Håfa Adai spirit is showcased with a stunning backdrop of paradise.

Guam is a world-class destination for every type of traveler, but it's definitely a runner’s choice destination.
