Faith Above the Capital: The Fiesta of Agana Heights
Situated on the lush, elevated plateau directly overlooking the capital city of Hagåtña and the Philippine Sea, the village of Agana Heights celebrates the feast of Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament. As the island transitions into the festive holiday season, this late-November fiesta is a deeply reverent celebration honoring the Holy Eucharist and the maternal protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
For visitors, attending this late afternoon celebration provides a fantastic blend of spectacular island views and close-knit community warmth. Removed from the busy downtown area just below the hill, Agana Heights offers a peaceful, deeply authentic neighborhood atmosphere that beautifully captures the essence of central Guam's hospitality.
THE HISTORY OF THE PARISH AND VILLAGE
Before World War II, the area now known as Agana Heights was largely an unsettled farming and ranching area utilized by the residents of the capital city below. It was also historically the site of a Spanish colonial fort (Fort Santa Agueda) built to protect the harbor. Following the complete devastation of Hagåtña during the WWII bombardments, displaced families moved up into the hills to rebuild their lives, transforming the area into a bustling, permanent residential community.
To serve the spiritual needs of this newly established village, the Catholic parish was dedicated in 1951. Positioned on Chalan Guma Yu'us (which translates to "Road of God's House" in CHamoru), the beautiful, wood-beamed church has served as the spiritual anchor for generations of Agana Heights families, continually standing strong through decades of island typhoons and post-war development.
FIESTA TRADITIONS: DEVOTION AND FELLOWSHIP
Because Agana Heights is a prominent, largely residential village overlooking the island's center, the celebration feels like a massive neighborhood reunion.
The Scenic Procession
At 4:30 PM, as the late afternoon sun begins to cast long shadows over the capital below, the procession begins. The faithful walk the routes near the church, carrying the image of Our Lady. The procession is an incredibly peaceful display of faith, offering prayers for the protection of the village's families and blessing the historic heights that served as a refuge for so many after the war.
The Village "Gupot" (Party)
Following the spiritual honors, the community shares a fantastic feast on the church grounds.
- A Central Feast: Benefiting from its close proximity to the capital, the fiesta table in Agana Heights is known for exceptional traditional CHamoru cooking. Guests are treated to endless trays of Red Rice, Kelaguen, roasted meats, and classic local stews, showcasing the pride of the village's cooks.
- Neighborhood Hospitality: The "Gupot" is characterized by the warmth of a tight-knit residential community. The atmosphere is joyous, welcoming, and relaxed. Visitors are quickly pulled into the fold, sharing meals, enjoying the beautiful choir music the parish is known for, and celebrating the beginning of the island's holiday season.
