In the scenic hills south of Hagåtña, the village of Sinajana—Guam's smallest village by area—celebrates the feast of Our Lady of Fatima. While Sinajana's primary parish patron is St. Jude Thaddeus, this October fiesta honors the famous 1917 Marian apparitions in Portugal. The devotion to Our Lady of Fatima holds a special place in the hearts of the island's faithful, especially given Guam's history of war and its enduring prayers for global peace.

THE HISTORY OF THE VILLAGE AND DEVOTION

Sinajana has a profoundly rich history that dates back to before the arrival of Spanish missionaries in 1668. The village name itself is believed to derive from the CHamoru word "china-jan," referring to a specific type of cookware used to boil wild yams. Before World War II, Sinajana was an agricultural hub, even operating at one time as the "Coffee Capitol" of the island. Following the complete destruction of Hagåtña during WWII, thousands of displaced families relocated to Sinajana, permanently swelling its population.

The deep devotion to Our Lady of Fatima on Guam is intrinsically tied to the island's experiences with conflict. Having survived the horrors of World War II and living in a strategically critical U.S. territory, the people of Guam heavily embrace Fatima's central message: praying for peace and salvation. The celebration in Sinajana is a localized, fervent expression of this island-wide dedication.

FIESTA TRADITIONS: PRAYERS FOR PEACE

The Evening Procession

Starting at 5:30 PM as dusk approaches, the faithful gather for the procession. Honoring the tradition of the Fatima apparitions, it is very common for devotees to walk the route reciting the rosary. Walking through the streets of Sinajana—a village that was heavily redesigned by urban renewal projects after the devastation of Supertyphoon Karen in 1962—the community prays for the safety of the island, the protection of families, and global peace.
