Devotion in the Heart of the Island: The Fiesta of Chalan Pago

Situated in the narrow "waist" of Guam, the municipality of Chalan Pago celebrates the solemn and beautiful feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. While the village's primary patroness is Our Lady of Peace and Safe Journey (celebrated in January), this June fiesta is a deeply rooted tradition for the community. It represents the abiding faith and the enduring warmth of a village known for its lush valleys and deep historical ties to the island's ancient past.

For visitors, the Chalan Pago fiesta offers a genuine, community-focused experience. Tucked away among the rolling hills and green foliage of central Guam, this celebration provides a peaceful contrast to the busier coastal tourist centers, allowing guests to experience the authentic "village" lifestyle.

THE HISTORY OF CHALAN PAGO

The name Chalan Pågu literally translates to "Pago Road" in CHamoru. Historically, this area was the main route from the capital of Hagåtña to the ancient, thriving coastal settlement of Pago Bay on the eastern shore. The path was notably lined with pagu (wild hibiscus) trees.

While a devastating typhoon and epidemic in the 1850s caused the massive population loss and abandonment of the original Pago settlement, the inland area remained a popular farming and ranching site due to its fertile soil. Following World War II, families permanently settled here, building the tight-knit residential community that exists today. The Catholic Church, Our Lady of Peace and Safe Journey, stands as the spiritual center of the village, honoring both the travelers of the past and the residents of the present.

FIESTA TRADITIONS: FAITH AND FERTILE GROUNDS

Chalan Pago's unique geography—sitting right on the dividing line between Guam's mostly volcanic southern half and its mostly limestone northern half—gives it a rich agricultural character that heavily influences its celebrations.

The Procession

The late afternoon procession features the image of the Sacred Heart, winding through the roads of the village. The route highlights the diverse and rugged topography of Chalan Pago, making it a very tranquil and scenic walk. As the community prays, the procession serves as a blessing over the homes, the wetland areas, and the historic land.

The Village "Gupot" (Party)

Because of its history as a ranching and farming hub, Chalan Pago's fiesta tables are famously well-stocked.

• The Harvest: You can expect a fantastic spread that honors the village's roots. Traditional staples and an abundance of fresh local produce take center stage, paying homage to a time when crops like corn, rice, taro, and yams were plentiful in the region.
