This localized celebration is incredibly unique, honoring a saint who actually walked on Guam's soil. It is a vibrant, neighborhood-driven fiesta that perfectly reflects the faith and diversity of a young, growing community.

THE HISTORY OF THE CHAPEL AND THE SAINT

The devotion to Saint John Paul II holds profound significance for the people of Guam. On February 22, 1981, Pope John Paul II made a historic stopover on the island, celebrating Mass for tens of thousands of residents. He remains the first and only pope to ever visit the Marianas, an event that is permanently etched into the island's memory.

As the village of Dededo expanded rapidly over the decades, new residential subdivisions like Astumbo were built to accommodate the booming population. To serve the spiritual needs of these families—who lived further away from the main Santa Barbara parish in the village center—the St. John Paul II Chapel was established.
