Hope in the Central Hills: The Fiesta of Saint Jude
Situated in the scenic central hills just south of the capital, the village of Sinajana gathers to celebrate its primary patron, San Judas Tadeo (Saint Jude Thaddeus). Revered globally as the patron saint of desperate cases and lost causes, Saint Jude commands an incredibly massive following across the entire island. This late-October fiesta is one of Guam's most heavily attended religious events, drawing thousands of devotees from every village who come to offer prayers of profound hope and deep gratitude.
For visitors, attending the Saint Jude fiesta is a powerful experience. It beautifully highlights the immense, unwavering faith of the CHamoru people and provides a front-row seat to the incredible hospitality of Sinajana, a tight-knit village known for its welcoming spirit and enduring resilience.
THE HISTORY OF THE PARISH AND THE SAINT
Saint Jude was one of the original Twelve Apostles of Jesus. Throughout Catholic history, he became associated with impossible causes because of his New Testament letter, which urged the faithful to persevere in harsh, difficult circumstances.
For the village of Sinajana, this message of perseverance is deeply woven into its history. Prior to World War II, Sinajana was a prominent agricultural hub. Following the utter destruction of HagĂ„tña during the war, thousands of displaced residents fled to Sinajana's hills to survive and rebuild. Two decades later, Supertyphoon Karen (1962) completely leveled the village once again, leading to a massive urban renewal project that completely redesigned the streets into the suburban layout seen today. Through wars and catastrophic storms, the community clung to its faith. Today, the beautiful St. Jude Thaddeus Church stands as a monument to a villageâand an islandâthat has continually overcome seemingly impossible odds.
FIESTA TRADITIONS: DEVOTION AND MASSIVE FELLOWSHIP
Because Saint Jude is so universally beloved across Guam, the atmosphere in Sinajana during this fiesta is vibrant, emotional, and bustling with activity.
The Procession of Hope
At 5:00 PM, the grand procession begins. It is common to see a massive crowd of the faithful, many wearing the green and white colors associated with Saint Jude. Devotees from all over the island walk the winding, terraced streets of Sinajana to fulfill a promesa (promise), offering thanks for answered prayers, miraculous healings, or asking for intercession in incredibly difficult family or medical situations.
The Village "Gupot" (Party)
Following the spiritual honors, the "Gupot" takes over the parish grounds and the surrounding neighborhood.

Island-Wide Feast: Because this fiesta draws crowds from far beyond Sinajana's borders, the feast is massive. You will find endless trays of Red Rice, Kelaguen, island barbecue, Kadon Pika (spicy chicken stew), and a vast array of local desserts like LÄtiya.
