The Final Patron of the Tri-Feast: The Fiesta of San Ramon

In the central village of Barrigada, the community celebrates the third and final of its village patron saints: San Ramon (Saint Raymond Nonnatus). While many villages on Guam center their celebrations around a single patron, Barrigada uniquely holds three distinct feast days throughout the year—honoring San Vicente, San Roke, and finally, San Ramon. Universally known in the Catholic faith as the patron saint of childbirth, midwives, and expectant mothers, San Ramon holds a special place in this central municipality, offering a celebration focused intensely on the blessing of life and family.

For visitors, the San Ramon fiesta offers a beautiful, family-centered look into the rich traditions of central Guam. Because it is highly localized, it maintains a deeply authentic, community-driven atmosphere that beautifully showcases the resilience and faith of the island's families.

THE HISTORY OF THE PARISH AND SAN RAMON

Barrigada is a land-locked village situated near the center of the island on Guam's limestone plateau. Historically, it was an area known for its highly fertile ranching and farming lands, and the modern residential village was rapidly developed and resettled during the post-World War II reconstruction era.

The devotion to San Ramon perfectly reflects a post-war community's profound need to rebuild its families after the devastation of the 1940s. Saint Raymond Nonnatus earned the title "Nonnatus" (meaning "not born") because he was miraculously delivered via a primitive cesarean section after his mother passed away during labor. Because of his survival, he became the patron saint of pregnant women and infants. In Barrigada, honoring San Ramon serves as a deeply spiritual tribute to the enduring strength of CHamoru mothers and the continued growth of the village's generations.

FIESTA TRADITIONS: A BLESSING OF FAMILIES

Because this fiesta centers heavily around motherhood, infants, and the protection of children, the atmosphere is incredibly nurturing, joyful, and close-knit.

The Procession of Families

At 5:00 PM, the procession for San Ramon winds through the residential streets of Barrigada. It is particularly common to see pregnant women, mothers carrying infants, and young families walking this route. Devotees often walk to fulfill a promesa (promise), offering prayers for safe deliveries, the health of their children, and the continued blessing of their growing families.

The Village "Gupot" (Party)

Following the spiritual events, the community gathers for the traditional feast on the church grounds.
