The Heart of the Island: The Fiesta of San Vicente
Located in the central hub of Guam, the village of Barrigada celebrates San Vicente Ferrer, the Dominican preacher known as the "Angel of the Judgment." While Barrigada is one of the few landlocked villages on the island, its central location makes this fiesta a major gathering point for families from all corners of Guam. It is a celebration of community connection, reflecting the village's role as a bridge between the north and south.
For visitors, the Barrigada fiesta is one of the most accessible authentic cultural experiences. It often serves as a showcase for the "Guam Island Fiesta Tour" (GIFT), welcoming tourists to experience the warmth of Chamorro hospitality firsthand.
THE HISTORY OF THE PARISH
The story of the parish is tied to the reconstruction of Guam after World War II. While Barrigada was historically a ranching area known for its fertile soil (the name "Barrigada" refers to the "flank" of a deer or cow, describing the shape of the terrain), the modern village center was established by the U.S. Navy in the late 1940s. The church, originally built in 1947, became the anchor for families relocating from war-torn HagÄtña. San Vicente Ferrer was adopted as a patron to watch over this new, growing community, which has since become one of the island's most populous and industrious areas.
FIESTA TRADITIONS: CENTRAL HOSPITALITY
Barrigadaâs celebration is known for its sheer size and the "open door" spirit of its residents.
The Procession
The procession is a major event that halts traffic in the center of the island. Devotees follow the statue of San Vicente Ferrerâoften depicted with wings and a trumpetâdown San Roque Drive. The route is lined with the homes of long-standing families who have lived in the village since the post-war resettlement, creating a corridor of prayer amidst the busy central village.
