The Grand Fiesta of the North: The Fiesta of Santa Barbara
Located on Guam's northern limestone plateau, the municipality of Dededo is the island's most populous and commercially bustling village. In early December, this massive community comes together to celebrate the feast of Santa Barbara. As the spiritual home to Guam's largest Catholic congregation, this fiesta is a monumental event. It perfectly captures the incredible diversity, deep faith, and vibrant energy of the northern villages as the island begins its transition into the Christmas season.
For visitors, attending the Santa Barbara fiesta is an absolute must if you want to experience the modern, multicultural heartbeat of Guam. It is one of the largest and most heavily attended religious celebrations of the year, offering a carnival-like atmosphere bursting with incredible food and community pride.
THE HISTORY OF THE PARISH AND THE SAINT
Saint Barbara is a legendary early Christian martyr recognized globally as the patroness of armorers, artillerymen, military engineers, and anyone in danger of sudden death (particularly from lightning or fire).
The history of Dededo and its patroness is a story of massive growth and post-war relocation. Before World War II, the original village of Dededo was actually located further south, near present-day Harmon. After the war, the U.S. military repurposed that land, and the displaced residents were moved to the current Dededo footprint. As the village expanded over the decades to accommodate a booming population of CHamoru families, Filipino immigrants, and other Micronesian islanders, the Santa Barbara parish grew exponentially. Today, the iconic church structureâwith its distinct mid-century modern designâstands at the center of the village, serving thousands of families every single weekend.
FIESTA TRADITIONS: MASSIVE CROWDS AND DIVERSITY
Because Dededo is Guam's largest and most culturally diverse village, the Santa Barbara celebration is uniquely vibrant and heavily populated.
The Grand Procession
At 5:00 PM, the grand procession weaves through the busy central streets of Dededo. Given the sheer size of the congregation, the procession is a spectacular sight, often featuring thousands of devotees. The faithful walk to honor Saint Barbara, praying for protection over their homes and families. The event briefly transforms the bustling northern commercial hub into a quiet, unified river of prayer and candlelight.
The Village "Gupot" (Party)
The "Gupot" in Dededo is arguably one of the most magnificent culinary experiences on the island, directly reflecting the village's diverse demographics.
