A Celebration of Humility: The Fiesta of Santa Bernadita
In the northern subdivision of Agafa Gumas within the municipality of Yigo, the faithful gather to honor Saint Bernadette Soubirous, the humble shepherdess to whom the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared in Lourdes, France. Unlike the centuries-old traditions of the southern villages, the celebration in Agafa Gumas reflects the vibrant, growing faith of Guam's newer residential communities. It is a festival that champions humility, prayer, and healing.
For visitors, this fiesta offers a look into the modern daily life of the island's north. The atmosphere is intimate and neighborly, as the church serves as the heart of this close-knit subdivision.
THE HISTORY OF THE PARISH
The history of Santa Bernadita is a testament to the perseverance of the Agafa Gumas community. Originally, the area was served by a small chapel under the jurisdiction of Our Lady of Lourdes parish in Yigo's village proper. As the residential population in the area boomed, the need for a distinct spiritual home grew. Through the dedication of local families who held fundraising drives and petitioned for recognition, Santa Bernadita was elevated to a full parish. The church structure itself is one of the newer ones on the island, featuring modern architectural lines that stand out against the northern limestone forests.
