A Hidden History: The Tradition of Atantano
Tucked away in the wetlands of Piti, separate from the main village church, lies a historic shrine dedicated to the Santa Cruz (Holy Cross). This celebration is a unique "local" event that honors the Feast of the Finding of the True Cross. While Piti is often recognized as Guam's port city, the Atantano celebration highlights the village's deep historical roots as the gateway between central and southern Guam. This is an intimate, community-driven event preserved by local families for generations.
For the visitor, this is a rare opportunity to witness a "family-style" village tradition. It takes place at a small, open-air shrine surrounded by lush jungle and wetlands, offering a peaceful contrast to the busy Marine Corps Drive nearby.
THE HISTORY OF THE SHRINE
The Santa Cruz shrine in Atantano has a history dating back over a century. The area of Atantano was historically a crucial rest stop for travelers making the long journey by bull cart or foot between the capital of Hagåtña and the southern village of Sumay. A cross was erected here to offer spiritual protection to travelers passing through the thick jungle and rice paddies. The current tradition is upheld by the descendants of the original caretakers (often the Tejada and Coe families) and the Piti Mayor's Office, who have maintained the shrine and the Nobena (nine days of prayer) through wars, typhoons, and modernization.
FIESTA TRADITIONS: AN INTIMATE GATHERING
Unlike the massive village-wide patron saint fiestas, the Santa Cruz Atantano celebration feels like a large family reunion.
The Sunset Nobena
The event typically begins at 6:00 PM, capitalizing on the cooler evening air. Devotees gather at the small chapel for the final prayers of the Nobena. The setting is distinctively rustic and serene, with the prayers often recited in Chamorro, echoing through the quiet valley as the sun sets over the nearby Apra Harbor.
