Faith on the Western Shore: The Fiesta of Piti

Located on the central west coast of Guam, the village of Piti celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Historically serving as the island's primary port town and heavily defined by the waters of Apra Harbor, Piti is a village that beautifully blends deep historical resilience with coastal tranquility. This mid-August fiesta is the spiritual highlight of the year for the village, gathering families to honor their patroness with deep reverence and traditional CHamoru celebration.

For visitors, the Piti fiesta offers an incredibly welcoming environment nestled among some of the island's most significant historical and natural landmarks. It provides a chance to experience the warmth of a community that has historically served as the gateway between the ocean and the rest of the island.

THE HISTORY OF THE VILLAGE AND PARISH

Piti was an ancient, pre-Spanish CHamoru settlement. Its name is believed to derive from the CHamoru word puti, which translates to "hurt" or "ache". Piti's prominence rose significantly in the early 1700s when the Spanish improved Apra Harbor, transforming the village into Guam's chief port. Goods were ferried to Piti's shores and transported via carts along the Piti-Hagåtña road—the only real road on the island at the time.

The village endured immense hardships during World War II, including the forced labor of CHamoru men to haul Japanese coastal defense guns (the Piti Guns) into the hills, and the massive displacement of residents following the 1944 American liberation to construct the modern harbor. Through this rebuilding era, faith remained central. While a small concrete chapel had been built in 1930, the construction of the larger Assumption of Our Lady Church began in 1944, and the parish was formally established in 1955.

FIESTA TRADITIONS: COASTAL BEAUTY AND COMMUNITY

Because Piti is lush with green jungles, mangroves, and vibrant coastal waters, the celebration carries a peaceful, scenic atmosphere.

The Procession

At 5:00 PM, the solemn procession honoring the Assumption of Mary begins. The faithful walk the routes near the Assumption of Our Lady Church, nestled beneath the hillsides of the village. The procession is a powerful moment of prayer, bringing the community together to ask for continued protection over their families and their historic coastal home.

The Village "Gupot" (Party)

Following the spiritual events, the community gathers for a feast that highlights the village's hospitality.

• A Nod to the Sea: Given Piti's origins as a pre-Spanish fishing settlement and its modern identity tied to the harbor and marine preserves, the fiesta table often features excellent local seafood alongside classic island barbecue and Red Rice.

• Village Resilience: The "Gupot" in Piti is a celebration of survival and continuity. It is a gathering where long-standing families share stories of the old port days, warmly welcoming visitors and neighbors from across the island to partake in the abundant food and fellowship.
